SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine) is the active form of the amino acid L-methionine.
L-methionine is particularly active in the liver and the brain and is essential for optimal brain function. SAMe improves the metabolism between cells and increases the number of receptors on the neurotransmitters as well as the activity of serotonin and dopamine.
With increasing age, the body produces less and less SAMe. A deficiency in methionine, B12 or folic acid also leads to a reduction in SAMe synthesis.
